THIS IS HARLEM

2020, co-designed and created with Gergana Genova

Franklin Montessori School, Washington, D.C.

This is Harlem was an interactive installation for children based on the work of American artist Jacob Lawrence. The installation references Lawrence's 1943 painting This is Harlem and his Migration Series (see more references below).

The installation introduced non-pressured art historical learning and encouraged unstructured play with interactive, hand-made elements including: a cardboard city with lights and windows, a workshop with tools, a "beauty shoppe" with chalk figures, a train track and train, suitcases with vintage clothes, a library, a church, and various rotating play objects.
